Why QR Codes Became Everyday Business in India

India did not fall in love with QR codes because the square looked clever. It happened because paying became easier for both sides of the counter.

A customer no longer needed exact change. A small merchant no longer needed a card machine. Banks could support a transaction without making the customer think about account numbers, IFSC codes or payment rails.

One scan removed several small delays. Repeated millions of times, that convenience became a habit.

The short version of the history

QR codes existed long before digital payments in India. The turning point was UPI. NPCI launched the UPI pilot in April 2016, creating a simple way for participating bank accounts and payment apps to work together.

Interoperability mattered just as much as speed. A merchant should not need a different sticker for every app, and a customer should not have to ask which app is accepted. The Reserve Bank of India later reinforced this direction by continuing with interoperable UPI QR and Bharat QR standards.

Ashneer Grover became one of the most visible names in this merchant-payment story through BharatPe. But BharatPe did not introduce QR codes or UPI to India. Its contribution was helping popularise simple merchant acceptance. BharatPe records its interoperable, zero-MDR UPI QR launch in August 2018.

What changed for business?

For consumers, payment became quick and familiar. For merchants, the cost and effort of accepting digital money fell. For banks, the payment network reached counters, stalls and stores where traditional infrastructure was often inconvenient.

The QR code became popular because it created value for the complete transaction, not only one company inside it.

That is the useful lesson for every business: people adopt technology when it removes friction from something they already want to do.

Payments made scanning familiar. The next opportunity is to use that behaviour for discovery, enquiries, service and follow-up.
